ADVENTURE
PASS
Wherever you live in Southern California, you're
just a short drive away from a spectacular wildlands
adventure-recreating in the San Bernardino,
Angeles, Los Padres or Cleveland National Forests!
Here you will find mountains as high as 11,500
feet, canyons, vast forests, lakes, waterfalls,
rivers and streams, and a wealth of recreation
activities from cycling to skiing all
waiting for you in your National Forests. These
precious lands are a unique resource, ours to
enjoy and take care of so that they will always
be there...for us, for our children, and for
their children.
Recreation
Fee Program, which includes the Adventure
Pass, helps:
-
Conserve,
protect, and restore natural and heritage
resources
-
Enhance
the visitor experiences by improving recreation
opportunities and services
The
Adventure Pass is required for use of
the many "High Impact Recreation Areas"
and developed recreation sites found in the
above-mentioned National Forests. The Big Bear
Discovery Center, most ranger stations or private
vendors sell the Adventure Pass and maintain
a listing of areas, sites and services where
the pass is required. There is also a mail or
phone option; for more information on this pass
and its purchase options along with information
on the (3) national Golden Passports and Golden
Eagle hologram, check out www.fs.fed.us/r5/sanbernardino/ap/pass-options.shtml.

If your vehicle is parked in a designated area
and your Adventure Pass
is not displayed, a US Forest Service Patrol
Officer can issue a "Notice of Non-Compliance"
that carries a $5.00 charge. You may return-mail
the fee or go to the Big Bear Discovery Center
to purchase an Adventure Pass and return-mail
the dated pass to demonstrate compliance.
CAMPFIRE
PERMITS
(NO CHARGE)
To
use a propane or gas stove, lantern or campfire
outside a developed campground or recreation
area, you need to obtain a California Campfire
Permit. These are available at the Big Bear
Discovery Center and all National Park Ranger
Stations. They must be picked up in person.
The permit is valid in any National Forest in
California; however, you are advised to contact
a forest service facility, such as the Big Bear
Discovery Center, to obtain current restrictions
given they vary from region to region.
The
permit is valid from the date of issuance to
the end of the calendar year. Permission for
campfires in remote or undeveloped areas is
determined by the fire hazard conditions. When
no significant dangers are present, stoves,
lanterns, and campfires are allowed in accordance
with the regulations listed on the reverse side
of the Campfire Permit. However, conditions
can change rapidly; always check what forest
use restrictions are in effect before you go.
Please call the Big Bear Discovery Center, or
the San Bernardino National Forest office at
(909)382-2600.
Fire
hazard conditions are determined by:
WILDERNESS
PERMITS
(NO CHARGE)
Wilderness is federal land designated by Congress.
It is a place "where the earth and its
community of life are untrammeled by man, where
man himself is a visitor who does not remain...which
is protected and managed to preserve its natural
condition" (Wilderness Act 1964). In the
Wilderness, preservation of the land, its natural
processes, native vegetation and wildlife is
the first priority of management; human use
is secondary. All mechanized equipment and vehicles
are prohibited (including mountain bikes).
San
Bernardino National Forest has 5 designated
Wildernesses: San Gorgonio, Cucamonga, San Jacinto,
Santa Rosa, and Bighorn Mountain. Maps of these
areas (except the Bighorn) are available at
ranger stations for $6.00. All Wildernesses,
except Santa Rosa and Bighorn Mountains, require
free permits for day hiking and camping. Permits
can be obtained in person or by mail up to 3
months in advance. Group size is limited to
12 people per permit; 8 pack-stock per permit.
Specific to the San Gorgonio Wilderness, the
free permit can be obtained from the Big Bear
Discovery Center or the Mill Creek Ranger Station,
(909)382-2882. For the other Wilderness areas
that require a free permit, please inquire at
the respective ranger station.

Woodcutting
Permits
(Currently $20.00 for four cords of wood; subject
to change;
please call the Big Bear Discovery Center for
the latest information.)
Fuel wood gathering is allowed in the San Bernardino
National Forest;
however, there are carefully monitored restrictions:
-
The
cutting seasons are usually from April 1 through
December 1; dates can change according to
fire hazard and weather conditions.
-
Cutting
is allowed only in designated areas. The Big
Bear Discovery Center or your local ranger
station will provide you a map when your purchase
your permit.
-
Often
there are limits within a designated cutting
area; only "dead and down" trees
can be harvested.
-
Always
check for restrictions and the occasional
"special sale."
-
Unless
special permission is granted, no living vegetation
may be taken.
-
Additional
restrictions and obligations will be listed
on the back of your map.
-
All
portable chainsaws must have an approved,
functional spark arrester.
Each
house is allowed 5 cords per season. A cord
of wood is defined as a stack that is 4 feet
high, 4 feet wide and 8 feet long (128 cubic
feet). Caution: before cutting on any day of
the week, first check with the Big Bear Discovery
Center or your local authority for the "fire
activity level."
The
Fire Hazard in the area determines these levels:
-
Level
1: Chainsaw cutting permitted all day (dawn
to dusk)
-
Level
3: No chainsaw cutting after 1:00 PM
-
Level
5: No chainsaw cutting permitted all day
PINECONE
COLLECTING
(FREE USE PERMIT - NO CHARGE)
Pinecones are an important element in the Forest's
ecosystem. They provide food for many birds
and animals, and are critical for seed distribution
to regenerate the Forest. If you wish to collect
some cones for personal use, please contact
the Big Bear Discovery Center for more information.
